Poems for the Smiling Heart

This Ancient Stone

This ancient stone
heavy with time,
sits at the edge of the river
watching its children play.
Children of sand:
Particles of primeval rock crumblings,
happiness for mollusks
and for driftwood—now resting.

Naturally, generously,
this great granite has fissured.
The sun from a cobalt sky
Pours into its open body
and nourishes
the sturdy white birch
breathing there.

We are such ancient souls!
With exploring hands we feel the rocky veins of life.
With questioning minds we scan the watery horizon.
With open hearts we receive
and give
an endless Love that stirs in the deep.
