Losing weight is one of the biggest issues consuming the minds of men, women and adolescents alike. There are no miracle drugs, no sure-thing diets and, sadly, there likely never will be. It's not finding a program that works that's the problem, but sticking to it. Often the hardest part of controlling your weight is controlling your mind. Do you eat your feelings or experience late night ice cream cravings? Do you deny yourself all your guilty pleasures for weeks only to snap and binge on cookies, chips and chocolate? What you need may be an extra mental push to help you conquer the cravings once and for all. Hypnotherapy may be just the push the doctor ordered. Mind Control or Self-Control? When you think of hypnosis, you probably envision the fast-talking showman who grabs brave volunteers to make fools of themselves in front of large crowds; people clucking like chickens or believing themselves to be famous rock stars. This, however, is not an accurate portrayal of hypnosis. Many psychologists and psychiatrists are now turning to hypnotherapy as a way to help patients work through chronic problems. Hypnosis, when performed by a professional and educated hypnotherapist, is a trance-like state achieved through extreme relaxation. Your focus is turned inwards in order to stop the thoughts that run rampant through your mind all day. Rather than going into a state in which you are unaware of your surroundings, as many people assume hypnosis forces you to do, you actually become hyper-aware. Like meditation, this extreme mental and physical relaxation shuts off the idle chatter and makes you more open to suggestion, but it cannot allow anyone to make you do something you wouldn't normally do. All hypnotherapists stress that while in a hypnotic state, the patient is always in control. If you choose to accept a suggestion to cluck like a chicken, you will. If it's not something you would ever do, you simply won't. How Does Hypnosis Help? Hypnotherapy is just another form of therapy, but performed in a different way. The hypnotherapist will use your trance-like state of relaxation and focus in order to get to the root of your problem, be it smoking, anxiety, chronic pain or a weight problem. The thoughts and feelings attached to why you do certain things, like binge on junk food in the middle of the night, will be discovered in order to be worked out. The hypnotherapist will guide you through visualization and help you associate negative imagery with habits you want to stop. For instance, if your kryptonite is a Big Mac, a hypnotherapist can help you visualize that burger dripping with fat and grease and growing mould, so that when you look at a Big Mac afterwards, it is repulsive rather than tempting.
